It epends on a number of factors, such as the type of turfgrass, the environmental conditions at your location, and the amount of available moisture in the soil.
In general, however, it is recommended that you water only when necessary so as not to waste water or over-water your lawn. For more information on how often you should be watering your lawn, see our blog article on how often to water your yard.
The type of sprinkler you use should depend more on the amount of water available in your yard and not necessarily the type of turfgrass.
Turfgrasses, such as St. Augustine or bermudagrass, that prefer high amounts of moisture will do best with rotors while grasses that prefer more drought conditions, such as zoysia or bluegrass, do better with spray heads.
In general, it is recommended to run your irrigation system until the water has reached a depth of 6 inches in your lawn. For more information on how much time this takes for each zone in your yard, see our blog article on watering times.
Watering twice a week, either in the morning or early evening is recommended.
